Importance of Workplace Safety

The Importance of Workplace Safety

We found out a pretty worrying statistic about Workplace Safety this week so we’ve decided to let you know about it to make sure you don’t become one of these statistics.

Workplace Safety used to be one of the lowest priorities for business owners in the construction industry. People used to climb onto roofs without barriers and never used to wear protective gear.

Construction work is really high risk and every week there are 50 construction workers in Victoria who have to stop work – more often than not because basic workplace safety is not up to scratch and can be prevented.

So, in order to combat this serious issue WorkSafe is increasing the number of construction sites they are inspecting in a three year campaign called ‘Back to Basics’. Because 1 in 3 injuries on a construction site are caused by the gear used every day, they are making sure that Tradies are using the right tools and equipment on the job.

There are heaps of numerous musculoskeletal injuries for people working in construction. These are a few of the most common injuries;

  • Back Injuries – Muscle stress and strain from handling equipment and materials, or possibly from bending.
  • Leg Injuries – Muscle and joint injuries and fractures from stepping off ladders or from tripping and slipping.
  • Knee Injuries – Trauma or strains from slipping on wet/uneven surfaces or from tripping down steps and ladders.

In order to prevent a lot of these injuries and improve workplace safety – these are a few of the things construction workers can do;

  • Ensure you use mechanical load shifting devices to move bulky and heavy materials
  • Order the materials you need in smaller sizes
  • Use the correct protective equipment and ensure you rotate workers through a variety of tasks
  • Ensure young workers are trained and aware of how to use manual handling equipment

Workplace safety is so important for construction workers. This worksafe video gives us a good idea as to why the safety of every individual should be of importance to those working in the construction industry and any industry for that matter.
